When you think about Miami Florida, I bet dragons don't come to mind right off the bat. In fact, how would a dragon live in a populated place like Miami without being seen or discovered by humans?
For Peter Delasangre it is because he pretends to be human, hiding in plain sight.
Peter was raised on a small private island in Miami, secluded but not isolated from the human population. The Delasangre family believe they are superior to humans, like most modern day dragons. Peter has a soft spot for human culture and understands humans beter than other dragons. But, his desire to belong with the humans seems to always lead him into trouble. But mostly, he is just feeling lonely. Dragons are very rare since they hide in human forms or desolate areas. He is the last dragon in the USA, that he knows of.
Peter likes humans, and human women in his bed. But dragons have a craving for human flesh, so his sexual partners usually meet a terrible bloody fate. Despite his efforts, he can't control his need for humans. Because of this, Peter is extremely lonely. His loneliness drives him to go out in search of a female dragon. A mate. And the only female he can smell lives all the way across the ocean in Jamaica.
The story of Peter and his dragon world are so unique and emersive. Alan F. Troops did an amazing job of creating a modern day world with a realistic and plausible addition of dragons. Would dragons have humans as slaves? Probably. Would they eat us? If we taste good, why not. But this book for adults was one of the first that made me love adult fantasy.
The Dragon Delasangre is the first book in a four book series and the drama and dragon lore are so cool and also kind of terrifying. Check them out and fall in love with Peter.
