For the month of April I decided to go with a dragon character that is a flash from my past. The book Dragon's Bait by Vivian Vande Velde was one of my favorites when I was young. It first came out in 1992. The young girl Alys gets falsely accused of being a witch in her village, and as punishment, she is given as a sacrifice to a local hungry dragon.
Lucky for her though, Selendrile is more interested in the flavor of her burning revenge than the taste of her flesh. The menacing dragon suddenly takes on a human form and promises to help her seek revenge and justice for what was done to her.
The story is full of drama, mystery and a cute friendly relationship. Selendrile is described to have glittering Amythyst eyes and long flowing blonde hair, and I am pretty sure this made him my very first real book boyfriend.
I loved the way that he was willing to be vulnerable in a human form, where he has weaknesses, just in order to have a friend in Alys and help her out.
Or, maybe he has his own strange dragony motives. Grab the book and check it out. It's a quick easy read and in my books, a classic.
