Saphira Brightscales

For July I decided to select a dragon that has been a huge inspiration for my own writing. When I was young, I picked up the story Eragon and was immediately obsessed with Eragon and Saphira's characters. The bond between rider and dragon was heartwarming.

Saphira was hatched as a baby, but she quickly grows strong and shows the wisdom of generations of dragons before her. Every time her little human is in doubt of himself, she says something to lift his spirit and remind him that she chose to be his partner above everyone else in the entire world of Alagasia. There are a bunch of quotes by Saphira that I really love. Here are a few:

"Without fear there cannot be courage... but when we are together it is our enemies that should be afraid!"

"I may be younger than you in years, but I am ancient in my thoughts. Do not worry about these things. Find peace in where and what you are."

"Live in the present, remember the past, and fear not the future, for it doesn't exist and never shall. There is only now!"

Saphira is the dragon that stole my heart many years ago. She was such an in-depth character, not just some animal people ride on. She is very intelligent and powerful. I suppose it's no wonder that my Dragons of Angoleth series' main character, Soraya, is largely based off of her.
